Nature and Landscape Discovery Tour

Depart from Kuujjuaq in the morning by Twin Otter and land on the gravel runway at Wedge Hills Lodge after a 45 minute flight.

Get settled into your private room in the bunkhouse, then head to the lounge for a meeting with your guide and lunch.

In the afternoon, set out on a guided electric fat bike ride on the top of the mountain overlooking the George River valley.  Stop and take in the beautiful scenery while you have lunch overlooking the river.

Return to the lodge in time for appetizers in the lounge, followed by a gastronomic dinner in the dining room.

Overnight at Wedge Hills Lodge

Today we will travel by floatplane to discover one of the most beautiful and wild coastlines in the world; the Labrador coast.

Your pilot and guide will lead you on a winding route through the Torngat Mountains, which are among the tallest and most rugged mountains in eastern North America. You will fly over mountain passes, inlets and fjords that cut deep into the Labrador coast.

We will make our first stop on a lake by the sea where we will explore a river where polar bears sometimes come to feed during the arctic char migration.

We will then continue our flight by flying over Iceberg Alley, a corridor recognized worldwide for its numerous icebergs. This is where the iceberg hunt begins! You will have the opportunity to experience a natural spectacle popular with photographers: iceberg hunting with the simple aim of bringing back the most beautiful glacial images.  This area also provides opportunities to see and photograph polar bears and seals from a bird’s eye-view.

Tradition has it that on your first visit to the region you must soak your feet in the North Atlantic to engrave this trip in your memory!

At the end of the day we will fly to the Moraine Desert Valley to set up our tents and settle in for the night.  Get your camera ready, as Northern lights are a frequent spectacle that light up the night’s sky in bright green.

On your fourth day, we will set out on foot for a half-day hike to observe and photograph the wildlife and scenery of the Moraine Desert Valley.

This area of ​​the Torngat Mountains is renowned for its vast semi-desert valleys and impressive views of valleys and moraine plateaus.

You will climb the bare mountain peaks to observe the movement of animal life on the plateaus, in the dune fields and between the green micro oasis’.

This is an area frequented by migrating caribou of the George River Herd. Caribou are very curious by nature, and if you remain very still, they often walk towards you within a few meters allowing for excellent photographic opportunities.

The surrounding area is also a place which offers the opportunity to observe black bears, wolves, red and arctic foxes, which at this time of the year are busy hunting and feeding their young in the micro oasis of dwarf birch trees that are home to ptarmigan and lemmings. Your guide will bring you to the locations best suited to observe these species and position you in order to get the best shot!

In this area of ​​the Arctic Cordillera, at one meter deep, the subsoil of the tundra is frozen permanently, this is permafrost. Trees and tall shrubs are absent from this desolate landscape, home to an impressive dwarf flora of shrubs and grasses, mosses, and lichens.

Among the birds that can be seen are ptarmigan, killer plover, raven, snowy owl, and Canada goose.

Overnight in your tent at the Moraine Desert Valley.

Today your guide will help you discover one of the most beautiful freshwater fjords on the Golden Peninsula.

On the agenda for the day is the inner fjord of Hebron.  Not far from the fjord you’ll fly over the magnificent Merewether Crater and the Kettles. These are glacial lakes with striking contrasts, which, depending on the brightness of the sun, change from dull/turquoise to emerald green. The pilot will be happy to tilt the aircraft to allow you to take a picture, or to make an extra loop over these colourful landscapes.

The floatplane will take you to land on the largest and most spectacular interior fjord in Labrador. Here you can admire the highest waterfall in the province. The Hebron Lake Waterfall is over 720 meters high.

Accompanied by your guide, you will go on a hike to discover the most beautiful viewpoints of the fjord, or if you want to make this day even more unforgettable, you can add a pleasant float trip downriver in an inflatable packraft towards the fjord.

Return to Wedge Hills Lodge in the afternoon.

Today you will take the morning off to relax and unwind from your adventure in Labrador.  By late morning, you will take a short boat ride on the George River to enjoy the scenery and make a stop at a peaceful spot on the shoreline to try your hand at fly fishing and catch your lunch!  Your guide will prepare a fire over which he will cook your fresh catch, among other goodies, while you sit back and enjoy.

Return to the lodge in time for cocktail and appetizer hour.

On your last day we will take a panoramic flight over the Fraser Canyon, and if the winds are of the right direction we will land within the canyon on the Fraser River.

Lost in the immensity of Labrador stretching more than 100 km long and 568 m deep, Fraser Canyon is the longest and the most striking canyon in eastern Canada.

Fraser Canyon is a geological wonder with several towering waterfalls.

At the bottom of the canyon flows the Fraser River where arctic char and salmon migrate. The river is an important nesting site for the Harlequin Duck, and is a commonplace for Peregrine Falcon and other species of raptors.

Along the way, you will pass Fraser Waterfall, which plunges more than 240 meters into the canyon.

Return to the lodge in the afternoon in time for a soak in the wood fired hot tub before dinner, followed by a bonfire and quite possibly your last Northern Lights show of the trip!

Breakfast, then Return to Montreal via Kuujjuaq.
