Journey Across the Sub-Arctic Tundra
Embark on a hiking and camping adventure across Québec’s sub-Arctic tundra and discover the rich tapestry of flora, fauna, and geology that define this magnificent post-glacial landscape. Out here, the only thing you’re guaranteed not to see is another person.
This is an autonomous expedition—freedom in its purest form. Choose to travel solo for quiet reflection and self-discovery, or share the experience with a small group of up to eight fellow adventurers. You decide the direction, the distance, and where to pitch your tent each night. Once you leave Wedge Hills Lodge and crest the ridge above the George River Valley, the vegetation thins, opening onto vast, rolling tundra—a landscape made for walking, where your eyes can wander for miles.
Whichever way you go, every step brings new wonders. Bright tundra flowers and clusters of vivid berries dot the ground, while wildlife moves across the horizon—caribou from the George River herd, black bears, grey and Arctic wolves, red and silver foxes, lemmings, ptarmigans, and grouse. A recently sighted muskox herd, only a few kilometers from the lodge, offers a rare glimpse of these prehistoric-looking animals in their natural element. Along the way, you’ll come across crystal-clear lakes and cold mountain streams—perfect for refilling your bottle and tasting the freshness of untouched water.
As evening settles over the tundra, make camp in complete solitude and let the silence of the North surround you. If the sky is clear, stretch out beside your tent and watch the Northern Lights dance across the horizon—an unforgettable finale to another day in the wild.
